Routing Information Protocol (RIP) is a type of distance-vector routing protocol. Instead of choosing routes based on speed or performance, RIP picks the path with the fewest hops, where each hop is one router passing data to the next. Additionally, it considers a destination entirely unreachable if it is more than 15 hops away.
This protocol relies on a simple process. Each router keeps a routing table listing all the networks it knows and how many hops it takes to reach them. Every 30 seconds, routers share their tables with their neighbors. If a router receives a better route, it updates its table and adds one hop to account for the extra step. Over time, this back-and-forth helps routers build a full picture of the network.
